ABOUT
The project is a typographical exploration that challenges our everyday common sense, with a specific focus on Hegel’s philosophical concept of “nothing vs something.”
PURPOSE:
To focus on movement of thought.
To question fundamental assumptions.
To highlight our biased process of thought.
WHY?
Our language is replete with words that present themselves with a rigid context based on how society views them. However, upon reflection, these words hold within them the potential to represent something or everything.
For example, emptiness is often looked down upon in our society, and nothingness is viewed as powerless, as are rest and sleep. Many mistaken beliefs and assumptions, such as the Latin phrase “ex nihilo nihil fit” (meaning “out of nothing comes nothing”), constitute the majority of our thoughts.
To challenge these assumptions and beliefs, this project focusses on the concept of “nothingness.”
CONCEPT
-
“That which is void is precisely form,
& that which is form is precisely void”
-
To confront the terrors of nothing
-
To question ordinary common sense
-
To face the fact of nothing
-
To art of seeing has to be learned
-
The empty is exceedingly powerful
-
Duality of meaning: There is no ‘is’ and ‘isn’t’ - one cant exist without the other.
you can’t have an ‘is’ without an ‘isn’t.’
-
Nothing is being; All being is in the state of change; in the state of evolution .
POSTERS: VISUAL & COPY
-
Statements that have a commonly accepted negative bias but in hindsight have a pragmatic validity beyond the commonly accepted.
-
These statements are met with disagreement and hence carry with them a shock value.
-
The composition of the posters is minimal- to make space for thought; emptiness; to make space for more (relating to the concept of ‘nothing’)
-
Usage of materials that depict flow, time, a change of perception, a new lens of sorts to see things as they are not as we are.
